WINES OF CANTON TICINO

The southern, Italian-speaking canton of Ticino (also known as Tessin) is separated from the rest of Switzerland by the Alps, enjoying a sunny Mediterranean climate. Swiss people from other cantons call Ticino their "sunny living room".
The Monte Ceneri mountain range divides Ticino into two zones: Sopraceneri (from Bellinzona to Lake Maggiore) Sottoceneri (in the towns of Chiasso, Lugano, Mendrisio, and vineyards of Castel San Pietro and Morbio).

Ticino’s vineyards are scattered in small plots and winemakers often combine harvests to ensure high quality standards. The total vineyard area is about 1,030 hectares.

Grape Varieties of Ticino:
Whites (<10%): Chasselas, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc.
Reds (90%): Pinot Noir, Merlot and small amounts of Gamaret, Syrah,Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Bondola.

Merlot — The Signature Grape of Ticino. Incredibly balanced, lively and intense, the Merlot here achieves its character through patient oak barrel aging. Introduced from France (Bordeaux) at the end of the 19th century after the phylloxera epidemic, Merlot thrives below 450 meters altitude, while Pinot Noir is grown higher up.
An exquisite white Merlot, Merlot Bianco, also complements the grape palette. A perfect visit is to the picturesque village of Morcote, where you can enjoy a blanc de Merlot from the local Tenuta Castello di Morcote with a stunning lake view.
Merlot Rosé from Mendrisiotto — "Swiss Tuscany". Rosato di Merlot Ticino by Gialdi offers a harmonious bouquet with aromas of white peach and ripe apples, refreshing and ideal as an aperitif. Gialdi’s vineyards spread across northern and southern Ticino, making their tastings a great way to explore the aromatic and flavour nuances of Merlot from different parts of the canton.

If You Can’t Travel Across the Canton. Check out the wine and gastronomy oasis in Lugano — the Fattoria Moncucchetto winery. This ultra-modern winery is perched on a hillside with breathtaking views over Lake Lugano, producing about 30,000 bottles annually. The vineyards, production facility, architecture, stunning landscape and restaurant, featuring a wine list exclusively from women winemakers, can all be experienced with a booked tasting.🍷.
